Congratulations to the teams of students selected to represent Australia at the 2025 International Olympiads.

The International Science, Mathematics and Informatics Olympiad teams were announced at the Australian Olympiad Teams Announcement (AOTA). The official ceremony was held at Australian Parliament House in Canberra on 23 June 2025, attended by the students and their families, program staff and distinguished guests from science, maths and informatics communities.

Our honoured guests included Australia’s Chief Scientist, Professor Tony Haymet and Senator the Hon Tim Ayres, Minister for Industry and Innovation, Minister for Science. They both attended pre-ceremony to congratulate the 27 high school students from around the country. We were also fortunate to welcome Members of Parliament, supporting the students and personally congratulating students from their electorates.

Siobhan Tobin, MC and ASI alum welcomed the audience and commenced proceedings with an Acknowledgement of Country. Siobhan, who is an alum of the 2012 International Physics Olympiad and now works as physicist at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, gave us an inspiring start before introducing the distinguished speakers.

We were welcomed by Associate Professor Stella Clark, AM, Chair of the Board of Australian Science Innovations, who acknowledged the generous support of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, as well as ASI sponsor, the Australian National University, “Your support enables us to uncover and train Australia’s brightest science students, and your investment in science education is truly an investment in Australia’s future.”

Stella noted how proud the ASI team are to be delivering opportunities and playing a role in supporting students who will go on to make real contributions to Australia’s scientific community. She thanked the teachers and schools who “work to develop the science leaders of tomorrow”, and expressed gratitude to the families who gave encouragement and support.

Stella congratulated the students selected to represent Australia, “You are here because you’ve demonstrated outstanding talent, determination, and potential. You are part of the next generation of scientific leaders. As someone who has spent a lifetime working across science and research, I can tell you – collaboration, creativity, and persistence are just as important as knowledge.”

Dr. Geoff Shuetrim, Board Chair from Australian Maths Trust, thanked their sponsors and support networks, welcomed AMT alumni and congratulated the students, teachers and parents. “You stand as ambassadors of Australian excellence, and we couldn’t be prouder of you all.”

We heard from Professor Haymet, who roused the students spirits and reminded them “you continue a great tradition of science endeavour and excellence involving young Australians”.  Professor Haymet encouraged the students to embrace their future, as “maths and science open doors to extraordinary careers…” and reminded them they are brilliant people who are problem-solvers. “The modern world has a lot of problems, but you have the potential to solve them.”

We extend our sincere wishes to the exceptional Australian teams who are proudly representing our nation at the esteemed International Science Olympiads, International Mathematics Olympiad and International Olympiad of Informatics in 2025. Your unwavering dedication, tireless efforts, and remarkable achievements have been a tremendous source of inspiration to us all. We have complete confidence in your extraordinary abilities and know that you will shine brightly on the international stage.

As you embark on this incredible journey, may luck and success accompany each and every one of you. We appreciate your determination and passion, knowing that your hard work and brilliance will undoubtedly make Australia proud.

Thank you for all the support along the way!

The students selected on these teams have outperformed thousands of other students in qualifying exams and intensive training to earn their place on the team. Their journey started by sitting the ASO Exam in July to August 2024 before being selected to attend ASO Summer School in January 2025, onsite at the Australian National University.

The team have gained immense knowledge and skills during the last year, under the guidance of their Program Directors, Deputy Program Directors and support teams.

We want to thank everyone who supports students to participate in our science extension programs. From the science teachers, school teams and principals, to the families and support people of our participants… to our team behind the scenes, our Board Members and our partners, supporters and sponsors…. thank you for recognising the importance of science!
