ASI's mission is to inspire, challenge and raise the aspirations of students in science. We aim to encourage students to study science and consider careers in science and science related fields.
Our main activities are the Australian Science Olympiad Competition which includes the Australian Science Olympiad Exams (previously known as the National Qualifying Exams), the Australian Science Olympiad Summer School, and the Science Olympiads as well as the Big Science Competition. These events are for students aged between 10 and 17.
The first step to participating in the Australian Science Olympiad Competition is to sit the Australian Science Olympiad Exams in Chemistry, Biology and/or Physics. Top performers in these exams are offered a place in the Australian Science Olympiad Summer School. This two week intensive program is run at Monash University and is an opportunity for talented students to study with others passionate about science. The very best of the Summer School students are then selected to represent Australia at the International Science Olympiads for Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
The Rio Tinto Big Science Competition is a one hour competition open to Year 7 - Year 12 students of all abilities. It tests students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well their science knowledge.
