What are the Australian Science Olympiads?

The ultimate challenge for science students

About the Australian Science Olympiads

Registrations for the 2022 Australian Science Olympiad Exams are now closed. All results will be sent out in late September 2022.

The Australian Science Olympiads are a national enrichment program for secondary science students.

The Australian Science Olympiads provide rewarding opportunities for students to extend themselves way beyond school science through challenging exams, stimulating extensions and enrichment programs and international competitions.

Australian Science Olympiads are a staged enrichment program where students receive support and recognition for their efforts.

Some students may receive offers for our Enrichment Pathways (such as the Junior Science Olympiad Spring School) before results are issued.

Stage 1: Australian Science Olympiad Exams

The Australian Science Olympiad Exams are challenging exams students sit in their school during July and August. Students can access free support to prepare themselves for the exam, and their performance is recognised with certificates and special invitations to residential and enrichment programs.

We also offer the Junior Science Olympiad Exam for students in Years 7-10. Learn more about the Junior Science Olympiad exam.

Stage 2: Australian Science Olympiads Enrichment Pathways

Based on their performance in the Australian Science Olympiad Exams, students are invited to attend the Australian Science Olympiads Summer School. This enrichment program is an opportunity for students to further extend themselves in their discipline, connect with subject experts, and develop new friendships with like-minded student from across the country.

Stage 3: International Science Olympiads

Based on their performance at the Australian Science Olympiads Summer School, students will go on to represent Australia at one of the International Science Olympiads in Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Physics and the Junior Science Olympiads.

Students must be Australian citizens at the time they are offered a place to attend the Australian Science Olympiad Summer School or the Australian Junior Science Olympiad enrichment programs.

Why? All students who attend the enrichment programs have a chance to represent Australia at the International Science Olympiads and may require consular assistance in the event of an emergency. Subsequently, we could not provide a complete duty of care to students who are non-citizens in such an emergency.

Students attending an Australian Science Olympiad Summer School (Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science or Physics) must not yet have completed year 12 at the time of attendance at the Summer School.

Students attending the Australian Junior Science Olympiad Spring School must be 15 years or younger on 31 December of that year (they must not be turning 16 during the calendar year).
