A message from Vlad Mikho
My name is Vladimir Mikho and I was one of the lucky students chosen to participate in this year’s Australian Science Olympiads Summer School.
I’ve always had a strong passion for maths and physics. From a young age, my parents fed me with heaps of physics problems to solve from their old school textbooks, and I loved it! My passion for physics and maths was sparked, and soon, I was the one finding and solving the problems in my spare time.
When I first heard about the Physics Olympiad, I wanted in. I knew it would be an awesome experience, and expose me to the possibilities of a career in physics. I was excited at the thought of meeting people who share my passion, being able to travel overseas and make friends and of course, all this while studying physics, sounded amazing.
Unfortunately, my excitement was short-lived.
I belong to a single-income family, and we’ve always been mindful with our spending. However, when my father’s job was terminated, it left my family with no source of income, and the payment of the fee to attend summer school was no longer viable.
The Australian Science Olympiads Scholarship made it possible for me to be part of the summer school experience. The time I spent there was definitely two of the most enjoyable weeks of my life. It has also opened up so many opportunities, including competing in the Asian Physics Olympiad recently in Vietnam.
For the friends I have made, the experiences I have had, and the knowledge I have gained during this amazing journey, I am indebted to you.
I humbly thank those who contributed to the scholarship and who have been generous enough to give, and I encourage everyone to continue to give, so that more students, like me, can have this amazing experience.
Thank you and warm regards.
