What we do...
Australian Science Innovations provides students throughout the nation with opportunities to enhance their scientific knowledge, understanding and skill, through the delivery of a range of programs.
With financial support from the Australian Government Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, and Merck Sharp & Dohme, ASI conducts the Australian Science Olympiad Programs and has the responsibility to ensure Australia's representation at the International Biology, Chemistry and Physics Olympiads.
In partnership with Rio Tinto, ASI delivers the Rio Tinto Big Science Competition - a challenging nationwide science competition for students from Year 7 to Year 12. ASI also presents Rio Tinto Big Science Online, a free education website providing flexible and fun science activities that are ready for students and teachers to use in secondary classrooms.
ASI's overall aim is to provide high quality programs for students and teachers, and to promote science in a positive and effective manner. A key emphasis of our activities is not what an individual achieves, but whether or not they have done their best in developing and realising their potential.
How do we do it?
ASI is an independent, non-profit organisation that has the support of industry, government, schools, teachers and students throughout Australia. ASI is dependent on many individuals and organisations that give freely of their time, services and facilities.
ASI has a long term partnership with Rio Tinto and is supported by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research to deliver different programs. Valued support is also received from many businesses, institutions and professional societies.
All ASI activities seek to have every participant learn in a fun, challenging and rewarding manner and to acknowledge those who are involved.
Our history...
Australian Science Innovations was originally known as the Australian Science Olympiads because our original reason for being was the International Science Olympiads. In 2005 Australian Science Olympiads changed its name to Australian Science Innovations to better reflect the broadening of its programs and audiences.
The Olympiad Physics Program was first established in 1987 which was followed by Chemistry in 1988 and Biology in 1992.
From humble beginnings and the hard work of many people, ASI is now pleased to involve many tens of thousands of students, and hundreds of teachers and schools each year in its Programs. ASI works very closely with the Australian Mathematics Trust which conducts similar programs for mathematics and informatics.
Our future...
Science and technology has an important and increasing role in every aspect of our lives - be it with the environment, economy or leisure activities. The key to the future for individuals, institutions, the nation and indeed humanity will lie with the ability to understand, utilise and develop science and technology.
ASI and those that support it are committed to helping today's students extend and realise their full potential as they become tomorrow's citizens, leaders and achievers.
We look forward to your ongoing interest, either as a participant or a supporter of our programs.
