Big Science Competition: Rules and conditions

1. Registration
1.1 All registrations must be made online after February 28.
1.2 Only schools can enter. Home schooled students or students whose school chooses not to participate are free to make arrangements to sit under the supervision of another school.
2. Cost and making payments
2.1 Australia: the cost of entry is $5.50 plus GST
2.2 International: the cost of entry is AU$5.50 (Note: There is a AU$55 shipping charge for international delivery of the exam papers)
2.3 Payments can be made by credit card or cheque.
2.4 Credit card payments are made online at the time of registration.
2.5 To make a payment by cheque, first register your students. This will automatically generate an invoice. Print off two copies of the invoice. Post a cheque with one copy of the invoice. Keep the other copy for your records. Make cheques payable to Australian Science Innovations, and post to:

2.6 The minimum number of students a school may enter is ten. If your school wishes to enter fewer than ten students, it is required to pay a fee equivalent to ten normal entry fees ($55 plus GST).
3. Delivery of papers
3.1 Papers will be delivered by courier about 5 days before the Competition. A signature is required upon delivery.
3.2 Schools must store papers in a secure location until they are required.
4. Sitting the Competition
4.1 Students must be supervised by a registered teacher or responsible adult nominated by the principal. Students are NOT permitted to supervise the Competition.
4.2 No student is to leave the room during the Competition. Students are to remain in the room until the Competition has concluded.
5. Return of answer sheets
5.1 A reply paid return envelope will be provided. Put all answer sheets and the school record sheet in the envelope, and mail it to the address on the envelope.
5.2 Answer sheets must be returned immediately after the Competition sitting. Sheets not returned to ASI within seven working days of the Competition may not be processed.
6 Alternative sitting dates
6.1 The Competition must be held on the scheduled date, unless a Variation of date form has been lodged with ASI and accepted.
7. Results, reports and awards
7.1 All schools will receive a diagnostic report for each group of students entered in the Competition.
7.2 Individual student certificates will be sent to schools for distribution.
7.3 Certificates are awarded on the following basis:
  • High Distinction (2%)
  • Distinction (15%)
  • Credit (50%)
  • Participation (all remaining students)
7.4 All awards are made at the absolute discretion of ASI.
8. Refunds
8.1 Any claims for refunds must be requested in writing by the principal of the school or their nominee.
8.2 All refunds attract an administration charge of $44.
9. Other charges
9.1 International entries will incur a charge of $55 for international postage and handling.
