Ms Gunilla Burrowes
Gunilla has had a diverse career, working in a broad range of industry and academic positions. After graduating from UNSW in Electrical Engineering she worked in industry in the renewable energy sector before beginning an academic career in Victoria and then Newcastle, Australia. She now combines her experience in both areas with her current studies towards a PhD in underwater communication networks which is part of a research program she manages at ATSA Defences Services, a company she founded with her husband in 2000. Gunilla is currently National Vice-President of Engineers Australia, sits on numerous committees and boards, including the National Engineering Registration Board, and is a Director of Engineers Media.
Gunilla is a passionate advocate for increasing the profile of engineering and science in our community. She has managed a Women in Engineering program at the University of Newcastle and was an instigator of Engineers Australia's very successful themed year - 2007 The Year of Women in Engineering. Her research and prominent role in diversity in engineering and gender-inclusive engineering education has given her an international reputation. In her leadership of outreach programs at the University of Newcastle, Gunilla developed and ran for 2 years the first of the Science and Engineering Challenge modules at a Science and Engineering Summer School. The Challenge continues to grow in Australia and overseas, and has already reached many thousands of young Australians.
