Ms Debra Smith
Debra Smith is Head of Science at Centenary State High School in Brisbane. She has had extensive involvement in science education at the local, state and national levels. Debra has been involved in science curriculum development through her position on the Queensland Studies Authority Science Advisory Committee and as Convener of the Chemistry Syllabus Sub-committee. She was one of the writers of the National Statements of Learning for Science and is currently a member of the team writing the National Science Curriculum.
Debra is a past president of both the Queensland and Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA) and currently holds the position of Treasurer of ASTA. She has authored many science resources including "Chemistry in Use", "Conquering Chemistry Blackline Masters" and the "New Q Science Series" for Years 7-10. Debra has been involved with the Big Science Competition since its inception and encourages entries from her students. She is passionate about science education and believes it is important for students to be involved in the many opportunities provided by organisations such as ASI.
